Our vehicles were built by the
South Australian Railways, at their Islington Workshops, between 1955
- 1971. There were a total of 74 x 300-class railcars, 37 x 400-class
railcars and 24 x 860-class steel bodied trailers constructed during
this time.

*Trailer car 874 was built in
1945, as trailer 811, and was loco hauled before conversion for use
with the Red Hen railcars in 1957. It was renumbered at this time.

Transmissions-
These
comprise Twin Disc hydraulic torque converters with reversing
gearboxes. The transmissions automatically change from hydraulic
to direct drive at approximately 52 to 55 km/h. A Cardan shaft
(Spicer / Sonnerdale Spicer) connects the reversing gearbox
to the final drive (Spicer / Sonnerdale Spicer) on the inner axle of
each bogie.
Performance-
Permitted
maximum speed - 55 mph (88 km/h).
Maximum
acceleration rate - 0 to 60 km/h in 44 seconds or standing ¼
mile in 38 seconds.
Braking
- (maximum service) - 60 km/h to stop in about 13 seconds or 200
meters and 88 km/h to stop in about 20 seconds or 457
meters.
